Hermenegild Peiker (restorer), St. Peter in the Mamertine Prison

Scripture records several times when St. Peter was imprisoned and in chains, but this image most likely refers to the legend that he converted two of his jailers when confined to the Mamertine Prison in Rome Pseudo-Linus, ¶5). If so the two men in the right and left foreground would be Processus and Martinianus, whom Peter baptized with water from the spring partly pictured at the bottom of the image. And the man in green would be Marcellus, the prefect's son who had converted earlier and become a leader among the Christians.
The original fresco was painted by Johann Baptist Zimmermann in 1753-56. It was destroyed in the bombings of World War II.
